Five-story, 12,500-m² (135,000-ft²) high-tech biomedical research facility, designed for a potential vertical expansion with civil site design for a one-half city block. MKA provided cost-effective vibration control, minimized structural penetrations, and allowed an extra floor of below-grade parking (for four floors total and 279 cars). Civil elements included coordination of site landscape with an adjacent 99 linear m (325 lft) corridor and with environmentally sensitive steep slope areas. Shoring design addressed a 12-m (40-ft) excavation, one-third of which was below the water table.
