Delta Airlines Two-Bay 747 Hangar at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)

Detroit, MI

Prime team leader (and structural and civil engineer) for a twin-bay 747 maintenance hangar totaling 11,000 m² (120,000 ft²) with civil site design for 1.2 hectares (2.9 acres) of aircraft pavement. The column-free hangar structure maximizes flexibility, allowing simultaneous service of a wide mix of narrow- and wide-body aircraft. MKA designed a "mega-lift" erection scheme for the 150-m (492-ft) roof trusses and extensively shaped the hangar’s roof structure to meet FAR clearance requirements, given the close runway proximity. The project was delivered ahead of schedule and 25% below budget.
