Seattle Opera Expansion

Seattle, WA

Four-story, 9,569-m² (103,000-ft²) performance facility with rehearsal spaces, production and costume storage, expanded loading dock, administrative areas, and a public lobby that can host a communal theater.  The expansion replaces Mercer Arena (to be demolished), immediately east of McCaw Hall in the Seattle Center theater district.  The new building is 19.8-m- (65-ft-) tall, designed for seismic isolation from McCaw Hall, and incorporates augercast pile foundations, steel framing, and special concentrically braced frames as the primary structural system.
