A 2-story, 18,581-m² (200,000-ft²) concourse addition that includes 8 new boarding gates, improved passenger screening operations, added airside concession space, baggage handling systems, and a new connector bridge linking the south side of the terminal to the north side. MKA collaborated with Smith Group and Corgan to identify an opportunity to enhance the design solution and enable the passenger flow through Terminal 4. The final design saves over $4 million by eliminating a long span, airside pedestrian bridge. Terminal 4 was expanded to facilitate airside passenger circulation but required only minimal strengthening of the existing structure. Further, the new S1 Concourse structure features an open moment frame system above the departures level to allow extensive natural light to illuminate the space, and a “diamond head” shaped roof with clearstories that create a tremendous new food court and passenger circulation area.
