Performance-Based Seismic Design

Performance-based seismic design (PBSD) of high-rise buildings is a methodology pioneered by MKA that is transforming the structural design of high-rise buildings in earthquake-prone regions. PBSD buildings meet the intent and performance objectives of the building code but are designed using a more rigorous approach that increases building performance reliability and enhances architectural flexibility (read more here). While very beneficial, PBSD methodology is also very complex, and MKA is the most experienced PBSD structural engineer in the world. We have successfully designed more than 60 PBSD projects in 15 cities.

Performance-based seismic design technologies available at MKA include the following:

  • Proven history of review and construction of PBSD designs without delay to project approval process.
  • Extensive use of cutting-edge earthquake simulation software for nonlinear time history analyses (successfully applied to many of the world’s tallest and most complicated structures).
  • Dozens of unique building simulations performed to analyze predicted building performance more rigorously than required by code.
  • Proprietary data post-processing techniques for clear, concise presentation to involved peer reviewers.
  • Established partnerships with national university testing laboratories to speed and facilitate validation of new ideas or techniques when required by authorizing agencies.
  • Experienced in both lead and peer review PBSD roles.
